It was the complaints about isolation and that we might be forced to take a step back to being
more careful that had me pull this book off the client shelf. It was a couple of years ago I worked with
Carol Kruck on her book about what it was like to be in a coma for 100 days.
The subtitle of the book Waking up is Hard to Do might give you a bit of insight about her story
– Carol was in a coma for 100 days and then woke up. She says it is not like on television where you go
from comatose to wide awake but rather a much longer gradual process.
In her book she recounts getting sick and it being much more serious then originally thought
through what her family went through with her in the hospital and then the happy ending where she does
awaken and have to learn a lot of life skill over again.
The part I could most relate to is the joy of a root beer float after all that time, apparently that is
what she craved and there happened to be an A & W close to the hospital that was able to fill the bill.
Reading Carol’s story makes you appreciate your health and also realize how fragile it is. She
does a great job of recounting what is really important and how a 100 day long nap can make you
appreciate those things a lot more.
For me it was a pleasure to work with Carol because we are of the same vintage and could laugh
at the same old jokes and remember the same television shows. The fact that she was an absolute star at
being on time for phone calls also helped, but it was a matter of working on a serious book and still
having some fun.
If the isolation is getting you down, spend a couple of hours with You are a Miracle I promise
you will feel better.
Thanks Carol
